UNIZIK Female Football Team To Represent Nigeria At The 10th FASU Games

Nnamdi Azikiwe University Female Football team is set to represent Nigeria at the 10th edition of the Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU)/All Africa University Games. The competition which holds from 6th to 11th June 2022 at the Kenyatta University Nairobi, Kenya will see Team UNIZIK featuring in the female football event of the games while NUGA Gold medalist, John Eigege, will be competing for honours in Javelin throws of the Athletics event.

Team UNIZIK female football side hitherto featured at the 26th edition of the Nigeria Universities Games Association (NUGA) sporting programme held at University of Lagos (UNILAG) were female football featured for the first time in the history of games with UNIZIK winning the bronze medal by emerging third best in a keenly contested female football event where 16 Universities across the country participated in, while also caping off a good representation by emerging as the most entertaining football team of the event as well as the most disciplined side in the course of the competition.

In anticipation of the 10th FASU Games, UNIZIK will be travelling to Kenya with a 22-member contingent made up of 18 female footballers, a male athlete and four officials. The Delegation will be led by the Chairman, Senate and Vice-Chancellor’s Committee on Sports, Dr. Dereck Orji as well as other officials such as the institution’s Director of Sports, Mr Kenneth Ogbonna; Coach of the female team, Franklin Ohazuruike and the team Media Officer, Engr. Dr. Ikenna Nwokedi.

It is the first time in the history of Sports in the institution that a team will be featuring in an African based Inter Universities competition held outside Nigeria, a feat made possible under the administration of the sports loving and 6th substantive Vice-Chancellor of UNIZIK, Prof. Charles O. Esimone, FAS, with the vision of ‘Project 200’ geared toward making UNIZIK Number one in Nigeria, Top 10 in Africa and amongst the top 100 in the world.
