Suspended for ‘Miracles’: Anglican Priest Case Highlights Nigeria’s Struggle Between Hope and Reality

This Anglican priest had no need to stage arranged miracles or prophecies, better known as “tubom tubom” prophecies. Now the Diocese on the Niger has suspended him.

He is in an established religious organisation with a proper structure and people who show up to worship God, listen to kind words from their priest, and gain hope, which is the main Naija opium for coping with hard times.

Zero need to fake anything!

But I understand how the minds of people like this work, because there are several pastors moving this way.

They understand times are hard and people are looking for miracles, not due process or proper protocol in getting what they need. That is why you will hear, “protocols will be suspended for you,” “unbelievable things will happen for you.” And when those unbelievable things don’t happen, they orchestrate one.

Naija is hard because our leaders are borrowing money without building relevant infrastructure to support business growth, employment and retention of talent in the country. None of these things are spiritual problems, at least. If we hold our leaders accountable, these issues will be sorted in no time. They should stop sharing rice.

But the leaders know we pray too much, even for them. Naija is one of the few countries who pray for leaders instead of holding them accountable when they loot our commonwealth.

This priest has betrayed the trust people have in the church and I hope he uses this suspension period to reflect on his calling.

For others capitalising on people’s hope to enrich themselves with tubom tubom miracles and prophecies, repent.

It is not life that we are living in Nigeria.
