International Literacy Day: Anambra Govt Gifts Radio Sets To Adult Education Learners

Anambra State Government has gifted Radio sets to Adult Education students in the twenty-one local government areas of the state.

The presentation was done by the Commissioner for Basic Education, Professor Kate Omenugha during this year’s International Literacy Day Celebration by the Anambra State Agency for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non Formal Education, AANFE in Awka.

Correspondent Njideka Okoye reports that while presenting the Radio sets to the beneficiaries, Professor Omenugha assured that Governor Willie Obiano is committed to achieving literacy for every Onye Anambra, hence the provision of the Radio sets to learners in adult education centers across the state to enable them enhance their knowledge through Radio especially, the Anambra Teaching On Air ABS Programme.

Professor Omenugha noted that Governor Obiano has equipped all the two hundred and eight-six adult education centers in the state with instructional materials and other necessary equipment for enhanced learning, calling on adults and those that missed formal education to enroll to acquire education free of cost.

She urged them to reciprocate the gesture by voting for APGA on November sixth governorship election in the state to ensure continuity and consolidation of the laudable achievements of Governor Obiano.

In her remark, the Acting Executive Secretary and Director AANFE, Mrs. Obianuju Orakwe commended Governor Obiano and Professor Omenugha for their efforts in eradicating illiteracy in Anambra State and for making Anambra AANFE join its counterparts all over the world in the celebration.

A resource person, Dr. Johnson Ewelum from the Department of Adult and Continuing Education, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, took them on instructional materials, while the Education, Information and Public Relations Officer AANFE, Mrs. Ebele Iky-Odili  spoke on monitoring and sensitization of the people in the twenty-one local government areas of the state, thanking Governor Obiano for enhancing their work for effective performance.

Some of the learners, including Mrs. Charity Onwuasoigwe, Chidiogo Anaso and Mr. Chinedu Ikegbunam gave testimonies of their benefits from various adult education centers.

Inspection of the exhibition stand by Professor Omenugha, the Permanent Secretary of the Basic Education Ministry, Barrister Nwando Obiano and the chairman, Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, ASUBEB Chief Patrick Ugbaja formed the highpoint of the celebration, which has its theme as ” Literacy for Human Centered Recovery: Narrowing The Digital Divide”.
