HURIJE, a New Rights Body Emerges in South East

To further the battle to enthrone respect for human right and rule of law and democracy, a new human right and pro-democracy group has emerged in Nigeria and was registered by Corperate Affairs Commission (CAC)

The group known as Human Rights, Liberty Access and Peace Defenders Foundation (HURIJE), is a non- profit and non -political organization aimed at protecting the rights of common people in the society.

Other aims and objectives  of the new body was to build capacity for civil society organizations and other establishments to enable them participate meaningfully in the process of their governance.

According to the chairman, Board of Trustees of the new group, Dede Uzor A Uzor, HURIJE was set up ” to promote and educate citizens in the freedom of speech and expression as entrenched in the constitution”.

Other aims and objectives were ” to promote and educate the citizens on the preservation of core values and social infrastructures and prevention  of deadly disease like HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, cancer etc.To encourage good governance through advocacy, coalition building, research, publications and information sharing”.

The group also said promotion and strengthening  the law structures by eliminating corruption and ills in the society through the conduct of relevant studies, surveys, symposia, and workshops will be paramount in their agenda among others.

The group also promised to bring together individuals, groups and organisations within and outside Nigeria by building partnerships, and sharing relevant information on ways to promote participation, accountability and effectiveness at all levels.

Other trustees of the group include Comrades Ada Chika Edochie, Charles Ejefonye, Secretary, Frank Udemadu, Noel Udoji, Uchenna Akpu, Chinyere Ezechukwu and Zaccheaus Unah.Others are Charles Ebilite and Uchenna Ekechi.
