FAAN Justifies N580 Billion Estimate for Runway Reconstruction

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has defended its N580 billion estimate for the reconstruction of runways across the country, citing the need to repair at least 17 runways and additional infrastructure. FAAN’s Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, clarified that the reconstruction budget also includes work on perimeter roads, fencing, taxiway links, and apron expansion at several federal and state-owned airports. Speaking on TVC’s Beyond 100 Days program, Kuku emphasized the urgency of the repairs, noting that many runways had surpassed their average lifespan of 20–25 years, with some exceeding 30–35 years. “The reconstruction of these runways, along with other necessary infrastructure, is essential for ensuring safety and operational efficiency in Nigerian airports. The N580 billion covers over 17 runways and related works, including perimeter fencing and safe environment upgrades,” Kuku explained. Addressing critics questioning the budget, she urged them to research the complexities and costs involved in building and maintaining airport infrastructure. Kuku also reaffirmed her commitment to improving Nigeria’s airport system despite challenges, stating, “I am prepared to step down if I realize my efforts are not yielding results. However, my priority is to ensure that critical infrastructure projects are implemented, and Nigerians are safe.” The reconstruction initiative underscores FAAN’s dedication to enhancing airport safety and addressing aging infrastructure.
