Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and officers of the Ekeki Police Division clashed in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, during an operation to arrest a suspected female drug dealer. The confrontation, which occurred at the Ekeki Police Division, reportedly created chaos in the area, with gunshots fired, causing panic among residents. Eyewitnesses stated that NDLEA operatives followed proper procedures by making an entry in the police records before proceeding with the arrest. However, policemen from the Ekeki Division allegedly obstructed the operation, leading to a heated confrontation. In the chaos, the police reportedly deflated the tyres of two NDLEA operational vehicles to prevent the operatives from leaving with the suspect, who is said to be the wife of a police officer. NDLEA spokesperson, Howells Obah, confirmed the incident, emphasizing that the operatives adhered to standard procedures. “Our men made an entry at the police station as required. However, we suspect the woman is protected due to her connection as a police officer’s wife. Efforts are being made to prevent further escalation,” he said. The Bayelsa State Police Command’s spokesman, Musa Mohammed, also confirmed the incident and stated that he was investigating the matter.
