“Passion, Not Power”: Barr. Peter Ekwueme’s Commitment to Transparency and Youth Empowerment in Anambra South

17

“My journey wasn’t born out of a quest for power — it was born out of passion.”
These were the words of Barrister Peter Ekwueme, candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for the Anambra South Senatorial Bye-Election, as he addressed journalists in Awka. He emphasized that his aspiration is rooted in a desire to serve and reform, not in personal ambition.

Ekwueme stated that his interest in running for office stems from a long-standing concern about the lack of financial accountability in public service. He recalled how, over seven years ago, he became troubled by the fact that elected officials were rarely asked to render accounts of public funds entrusted to them.

“There was something that offended my thinking over seven years ago. It is the fact that people who were elected into political offices were not asked to open an account. All of us will agree that a society like Anambra South can be likened to an association. Of course, we know that an association comes together to do a project, and after the project, they all converge again so that the treasurer and the financial secretary will account to them on how the money was spent. But you will find it very shocking that our people, what they do every four years, is to come together to vote away their right, sometimes in exchange for two thousand, three thousand, sometimes five thousand. They never reconvene to check how their resources were managed all these years.”

He further explained that the absence of structured platforms for youth to demand accountability led him to establish the Youth Association Anambra South Senatorial District, aimed at creating a unified voice to ask critical questions about public spending.

“Seven years ago it came to my mind — why don’t people ask for open account? I said, well, the youth who are supposed to ask for open account are accused by political accounts of being rowdy and disorganized. So the youths lacked the corporate platforms to ask questions. That’s why I created the Youth Association Anambra South Senatorial District, with the sole aim of coming together as a corporate entity to ask: ‘How did you spend our money?’ And we started that journey…”

Barr. Ekwueme, a legal luminary and son of Nigeria’s former Vice President, Dr. Alexander Ekwueme, is among the candidates seeking to replace the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who died in office in 2024 while serving under the NNPP. He made these remarks during an interactive session with the Congress of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council*, held in Awka.

He stated that his leadership would be anchored on open-door policies, with regular engagements involving youths, women, men, and key stakeholders across the senatorial zone. These forums, he said, would serve as platforms to brainstorm and develop practical solutions for socioeconomic growth and improved security.

According to Ekwueme, the Senate needs individuals with both intellectual depth and political will to confront corruption and drive meaningful change. He expressed his desire to empower constituents, especially the youth, and transform the zone into a thriving industrial hub.

“The main reason is to end corruption. I don’t want my family to migrate to the UK or any other parts of the world just to succeed. I want to contribute to making Nigeria livable and Nigerians prosperous. I want to support my zone to be corruption-free.”

He pledged to provide monthly public reports detailing how funds allocated to the district are received and utilized. Every project — from road construction to street lighting and empowerment initiatives — would be documented and made accessible to the press and the public.

“If I win, every road, street light, empowerment, and other programs executed under my watch must be fully accounted for. I will set a record and legacy that other senators nationwide will adopt.”

On tackling unemployment, Ekwueme promised to invest in ICT training, career coaching, and professional mentorship for young people, helping them build skills and confidence to succeed in their chosen paths.

“I will provide career coaching and mentoring to the younger generation because most of them need guidance to excel in their chosen careers and endeavours. I am an advocate for youth development. I am also an advocate for a Nigerian President of Igbo extraction. It is my hope that the young people will understand this and vote for me,” he stated.

In his remarks, NUJ State Chairman, Comrade Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, commended Barr. Ekwueme for stepping forward to challenge the status quo, and wished him success in the upcoming election, assuring that the union would provide fair and unbiased coverage.
