Residents in some streets of Ifite Awka known as ‘down school’ were gripped by fear when electric poles carrying high tension wires sparked off threatening fire along Ifite road.

The incident took place this evening Monday, the 10th day of July, 2023, at about 6:55 pm.

During the incident which affected some electric wires on poles close to vingold lodge, Zamani’s shop located opposite Mata Dei junction etc were seen sparking fire and burning linearly.

Road users who were at the spot were seen running helter skelter and scampering for safety. Others who were directly under the burning wires were also seen taking to their heels, as to avoid getting electrocuted by the wires which may descend on them when they cut.

One Mr. Okechukwu Iheme, a provision shop owner around the area revealed to our reporter, that there had been series of such incident and it was quite unfortunate and heartbreaking that the body in charge of electricity in the area , Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has not done anything with respect to forestalling further occurrence.

His words: “This is not the first, second or the third time that this kind of thing is happening here. Sometimes, when it happens, it takes like 2 to 3 weeks before they will fix it again. That’s one of the reasons why this part_ _of ifite seldomly have light. So, if nothing is done urgently, one day it may burn down people’s houses’.

He therefore called on the EEDC to come to their aid without delay so that people in the area will stop living in fear.

However, it is worthy to note that, as at the time of filling this report, that it has been confirmed by our reporter that no live was lost and no property was damaged except the wires that got burnt.

Moreover, that after the incident which lasted for about ten minutes, serenity was restored and people continued their normal businesses.
