NLC, TUC, CNG, Others Condemn Federal Government’s 50% Telecom Tariff Hike

0

The Federal Government’s approval of a 50% hike in telecommunications tariffs has sparked widespread outrage from labor unions, advocacy groups, and civil society organizations. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) described the decision as an added burden on Nigerians already grappling with economic hardship, threatening protests and a boycott of telecom services. The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) and the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) criticized the hike as oppressive and ill-timed, while the Movement for Socialists Alternative (MSA) warned of overstretching citizens’ patience. The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) threatened legal action if the decision is not reversed within 48 hours. In defense, telecom operators, through the Association of Telecom Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), argued that the hike is necessary to address rising operational costs and sustain service quality. Meanwhile, consumers and advocacy groups demand a reconsideration, calling for dialogue to ensure a more balanced solution.
