Anambra State Government Set To Enforce Environmental Laws
Anambra State government says it will start enforcing Environmental Laws of the state which contains that all individual actions contributing to erosion and environmental degredation are to be stopped forthwith.
The Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation Dr Law Mefor made this known at Idemili North Secretariat, Ogidi, during a one day stakeholders summit on environment, capturing flooding, erosion, waste management and security, where he read out Anambra State Executive Council’s decision on how to tackle environmental disaster.
Addressing the stakeholders, Dr Mefor said that government has ordered construction of mandatory catchment pits in every house hold, residential, commercial and religious buildings, adding that all the houses channeling runoff water onto the roads shall be sealed until catchment pits are constructed.
He also said that the state council requested communities to constitute Environmental Teams to identify and report erosion sites to government and coordinate community remedial action as he said that government intervention will be contingent on full compliance with environmental health standards.
Speaking earlier, the Mayor of Idemili North council area, Mr Stanley Nkwoka said that the summit has become imperative because Anambra is reducing drastically in terms of land mass, owing to the many erosion sites in the state, as according to him, every community in the state has three or four active erosion sites which he attributed to unfriendly attitude of Ndi Anambra towards environmental health, warning all to desist from pouring debris inside drainages.
The state Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Chief Ifeatu Obiokoye, expressed readiness of the Idemili stakeholders in supporting every action geared towards erosion and flood control, appreciating Governor Chukwuma Soludo for all he is doing to save Anambra from further disaster.
