Groups unite, pledge support for Anambra nude parade victim

Joint Human rights activists for the implementation of Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law, VAPP Law, of Anambra State have pledged their solidarity towards ensuring that justice is given to widow, Mrs Blessing Ajuese Egwuatu, who was accused of killing her husband with infidelity.

They made the pledge on Tuesday after a Magistrate court ruling in Otuocha, Anambra East LGA, Anambra State, where the court granted bail to eight suspects involved in the parade of the widow round the streets of Aguleri community.

The Police in the State had nabbed the suspects after they were allegedly caught in a viral video parading the widow naked in public.

In the video, the woman was made to sit by her late husband’s body, assaulted and was accused of causing the death of her husband through her alleged infidelity.

The matter was presided by Chief Magistrate, His Worship M. I. Ogolo who gave the ruling, Tuesday, after a four count charge of attempted murder, physical assaults, denial of rights and false accusations was leveled against the defendants.

The court ruled that the matter was a bailable offence, having received applications for the release of the suspects in its previous sitting.

However, the suspects were granted bail on condition of meeting several bail terms including: providing a surety, passport photographs and the sum of two hundred thousand naira, each.

Speaking after the court ruling, the group comprising of VAPP Implementation Committee, CPN, NAPTIP, NHRC, FIDA, NUJ and ASCRIC Led by Ms Okoye, Hope declaring Zero tolerance to SGBV and all forms or Violence against Persons in Anambra State said that since police has already transmitted the case file to DPP for prosecution at the High Court, they will follow up the matter with the Ministry of Justice to the time justice would prevail.
