Couple Arrested in Anambra for Sending Threatening Messages
The Anambra State Police have apprehended a couple, Kingsley Okoye, 36, and Chidinma Okoye, 27, for allegedly sending threatening messages and attempting to kidnap unsuspecting individuals. According to a statement issued on Friday by the police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, the couple specialized in sending text messages threatening abduction, demanding ransom, and issuing ultimatums with threats of either kidnapping or murder. Ikenga confirmed that the couple was arrested on Friday by a joint security team, including both the police and vigilante operatives, who acted on information gathered through technological means. The suspects reportedly confessed to the crime, admitting to destroying some of the SIM cards they had used in the commission of the offenses. The statement read, in part: “The Anambra State Police Command is aware of and investigating a recent voice note circulating regarding a victim’s escape from an attempted abduction by an alleged security operative.” In light of the ongoing reports of abduction threats and kidnapping attempts, Ikenga continued, “The Joint Security Force, acting on technology-driven intelligence, arrested Mr. Kingsley Okoye, 36, and Mrs. Chidinma Okoye, 27, in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area. Phones and SIM cards were recovered from the suspects.” The couple allegedly used threatening messages to extort money, with demands for ransom, threatening the victims with abduction or death. They later admitted to destroying the SIM cards they had used for the criminal activity. The state’s Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered that the case be transferred to the Anti-Kidnapping/Robbery squad for further investigation, and the suspects will be charged in court once the investigation is complete. In another update, Ikenga stated that the command is investigating a recent voice note concerning a victim’s escape from a potential abduction by an alleged security officer. He emphasized that the police are taking the matter seriously, deploying all necessary intelligence to identify the suspects and prevent similar incidents from happening again.
