Bauchi Varsity ASUU Launches Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid Allowances, Poor Working Conditions
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Bauchi State’s Sa’adu Zungur University has commenced an indefinite strike, citing unresolved issues including unpaid academic allowances, lack of pension and retirement schemes, and poor working conditions. The decision was announced on Friday, November 29, 2024, during a press conference following a congress at the university’s Yuli campus. ASUU SAZU Chairperson, Auwal Nuhu, explained that the strike was a result of the university management and the state government’s failure to address the union’s demands despite multiple appeals. Nuhu described the situation as “unbearable,” highlighting that the university’s staff have been left demoralized and financially insecure after years of service. He stressed that the strike would continue indefinitely until concrete steps are taken to resolve the issues at hand. The strike follows previous warnings, including the retirement notification of about 30 PhD holders.
