The Anambra State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the protection, inclusion, and empowerment of widows across communities in the state as the world marked International Widows Day 2026.

The observance, held globally on June 23, is dedicated to recognizing the strength, resilience, and contributions of widows while highlighting the social, economic, and cultural challenges many continue to face.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, the Honourable Commissioner, Mrs. Chinyere Esther Onyekesi, said the day serves as a reminder of the need to build a society where widowhood does not translate to isolation, neglect, or loss of dignity. She noted that widows remain critical stakeholders in community development and must be accorded the respect, visibility, and support they deserve.
