Akeredolu’s wife trains 368 girls on solar technology
Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, wife of Gov Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, says she has spent N130.4 million to provide digital and solar technology training for 368 girls in 2021.
The governor ‘s wife made the disclosure on Tuesday in Akure during a press conference to commemorate the 2021 International Day of the Girl Child.She said the girls were participants at the 2021 Bemore Summer Boot Camp in Ondo State.Anyawu-Akeredolu, the founder of Bemore Empowered Initiative, said that a laptop and home solar kits were given to each of the 368 participants of the boot camp which took place in August.
According to her, the initiative has has resulted in the training and empowerment of some 2000 girls in Information Communication Technology (ICT).She described the exercise as the single largest investment in girl-child education in the last four years in Ondo State, with the distribution of 912 laptops between 2017 and 2021.
“In the last four years, we have offered digital and solar technology training to almost 2000 girls.“Bemore has come to stay. We will keep churning out more girls each year because parents have seen the results.“We need to protect the girl child from molestation, so we introduced rape awareness and taekwondo.
“They need to know they have the skills to protect themselves because they will not always be protected by their parents,” the governor’s wife said.She said that Bemore was determined to change the narrative, because women should solve the problems facing women folk in Nigeria.Anyawu-Akeredolu said women usually understood where the girl child was coming from, “because as a woman, we understand where the shoe pinches”.
She said that the girl child needed to explore the possibilities of engaging in gender-neutral technology, which could make girls relevant and the world a better place.Also, Mary Ogunga, President of National Association of Ondo State Students (NAOSS), said the girl child should always be a good ambassador.Making reference to herself, as the first female president of the association, Ogunga said the girl child should not relent in her effort to achieve her dreams.(NAN)
