World Teachers’ Day: ASUSS member contributes schools’ challenge trophies

A member of Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Kwara chapter, Comr. Jimoh Daudu on Tuesday donated two trophies to the association.

Daudu, who donated the commemoration of the World Teachers’ Day in Ilorin, said it was to resuscitate the schools’  quiz and debate challenge. He said there was the need to get back to the grassroots and encourage students to be upright.“Back in those days, we use to have schools challenge in terms of quizzes and debate and that is what I have in mind by donating this trophy.”So, as from next year, we will organise the competition and source for sponsors to change the narrative,” Daudu said.

The Caretaker Chairman, Kwara ASUSS, Comr. Kayode Aduagba urged the stakeholders to be involved in the association’s quest for autonomy from the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the spirit of Teachers’ Day.”Our struggle started having observed the insensitivity on the part of the NUT towards the plights of secondary school teachers who are faced with many obstacles and challenges.”We have indicated in writing our withdrawal from the NUT, which has been submitted to the NUT office since Nov. 2020.“The same was done for the TESCOM Chairman, Head of Service, Commissioner of Finance and Attorney General’s office, but we hope that very soon, our struggle will be fruitful,” Aduagba said.

The Chairman, Trade Union Congress in Kwara, Comr. Akinsola Akinwumi called for dedication from members of the association in achieving success with the struggle.”We all know that teachers should be the most appreciated profession but the reverse is the case in this part of the world.”This does not mean that we will relent our efforts because we believe there will be light at the end of the tunnel,” Akinwumi said. Dr Abdulrazaq Akanbi from the University of Ilorin, the guest lecturer charged the teachers to help in upholding the morals to promote tolerance among the students.

The lecturer, who spoke on the topic: ”An ideal teacher in the face of insecurity and COVID-19”, said the teachers should serve as exemplary leaders by imbibing ethical values. Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Alhaji Moshood Gobir, urged the teachers to inculcate discipline in the students. He said that teachers in the state should be appreciative of the present administration in its up-to-date payment of their salaries. (NAN)
