UNIZIK making tremendous progress in institutional capacity, research – Prof Esimone

The Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof Charles Okechukwu
Esimone, FAS, has said his institution has made rapid progress in its pursuit of academic excellence, research and learning.

The Unizik Vice-Chancellor said the institution had, since his appointment as the 6th
Vice-Chancellor, upped the ante in the drive to reposition academic
excellence and had recorded massive success in research and discoveries.

He said Project 200 policy, introduced in his tenure, had not only encouraged the university community but propelled staff and students to publish in selected high impact journals in various disciplines which, according to him, has yielded tremendous results leading to awards and recognitions to the university community.

Esimone who spoke as a special guest at March 2022 congress of the Anambra State Council of the
Nigeria Union of Journalists led by Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, PhD, held at Godwin Ezeemo International
Press Centre, Awka, informed congress about the selection of the revered institution named after Nigerian nationalist, Nnamdi Azikiwe, as one of the Centres of Excellence for TETfund research grants and among other approvals, like the release of N14m from TETfund for COVID-19 special intervention research grant.

He further disclosed that its capacity in special research had
brought rapid rise in the national and international reputation of the
University, leading to successes of its staff members in attracting grants for the institution.

He said: “The national and international profile of the University has been rising through Memoranda of Understanding signed with national and international institutions.

“There has been an increase in the number of staff attracting research
grants from various organizations.”

Prof Esimone also informed that his administration had resuscitated the University Senate’s research grant and had remodeled the institution’s inaugural lectures to virtual monthly sessions, thereby, eliminating logistics that had delayed such exercise in the institution.

He reiterated that the core mandate of the University is teaching,
research and community/public service and reminded that the core emphasis of the institution based on five prongs of ACADA strategy that lean heavily on research that impacts positively on society.
