Diocese on the Niger, Anglican Communion, Anambra State, Monday, May 6, 2024, celebrated with jubilations, UMTE candidates of the diocese who scored 270 and above in the just released result of the University Matriculation Examination.
The event which was held at the Calvary Chapel, Episcopal House, GRA, Onitsha, attracted parents and some of the teachers of the students including archdeacons of their archdeaconries.
In a speech, while presenting Educational Merit Award to each of the students, the Bishop of the Niger, the Rt Rev Dr Owen Nwokolo, explained that the gesture was aimed at encouraging the students for more exploits.
He commended the students for their success in the examination and advised them to always take their studies seriously, reminding them that they were to face more academic challenges in their next level of education.

The bishop told them that the diocese would always be proud of them as long as they took their studies seriously, adding that as a life-transforming agency, the diocese did not treat issues concerning education with levity.
While emphasising how much the diocese valued education, he gave a brief narration of how deeply the diocese had been involved in education.
According to him, “Diocese on the Niger started the first Nursery School, the first Primary School, the first Secondary School, the first Teacher Training College and the first hospital in this part of the world, and today we are establishing one of the best universities in the country, the University on the Niger.

“So, we cannot relent in doing anything that will help us to achieve excellence and to promote sound knowledge as well as to inculcate discipline in the life of our youth and the entire society”, the bishop said.
He regretted how he said education was today being bastardized and expressed fears that if proper caution was not urgently taken, “it will soon plunge into the abyss because of the attitude of some educators and parents who encourage examination malpractices.
“Some teachers and parents are desperate for certificates without discipline and hard work to the extent that today some people have rich certificates but cannot pass simple tests or justify the certificates they parade.
“These are some of the practices the Diocese on the Niger is fighting with determination to subdue. We want to stamp out all shades of examination malpractices in this diocese”, Bishop Nwokolo assured.
Earlier, the Diocesan Education Secretary, Ven Uzo-Nwachukwu Okeke, had in an opening address lauded the students for making the diocese and their parents proud and urged them not to relent in their academic endeavours.
Also, the Principal of Dennis Memorial Grammar School (DMGS), Onitsha, Ven Chigozie Anieto, equally had, while presenting a short seminar on the right attitude for academic success, remarked that various factors often combined to bring about desired intellectual and moral development.
He said that environmental, psychological and genetic factors, among others naturally impacted, to a certain degree, the success or failure of any individual, and therefore appealed to the students to always use the factors to their advantage.
