The “Alert Governor” at 7: Obiano aimed too low and hit

The Nigerian state is not a particularly kind one. It is basic civics that every worker is indeed deserving of his/her wage. Yet, Nigeria has so pauperised even its supposed middle class that mundane things like payment of salaries is now viewed as an accomplishment.

To be sure, Gov. Obiano did not create this environment. He however deepened it in Anambra by publicly celebrating “compliments” received for doing the barest minimum.

I have previously chided this “celebration of mendacity.” I argued that “anybody who does not have the intellectual acuity and capacity to mobilise enough resources to take care of Anambra’s workforce, and as well wrought meaningful developmental projects has no business being the governor of Anambra State in the first place.”

As a business person responsible for the welfare of just a few staffers, I totally understand that feeling when payday is approaching and account is in the reds. I also understand that relief when you are finally able to meet your contractual obligation to your staffers. Yet, on this matter, I’m afraid Gov. Obiano aimed too low and hit.

Unlike many other states, there was a rock solid foundation layed up. Obiano’s Anambra could have easily reached for the skies, but our governor’s heart gladly accepted, and sadly settled for, the local championship they told him he won.
