Teenager, another bag 1year jail term for cultism

A Yaba Magistrates’ court in Lagos on Tuesday sentenced a teenager and another to one year imprisonment each for belonging to an unlawful society and smoking Indian hemp.

The convicts are; Peter Okoro, 18, and Aniete Donatus, 30.

Magistrate Oluwatoyin Ojuromi, sentenced them to one year imprisonment each on a three-count charge of conspiracy, belonging to an unlawful society and harmful acts.

Ojuromi, however, did not give the convicts an option of fine.

They were arraigned on Jan. 28, 2020 and had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Oriabure, told the court that the convicts committed the offences about 2a.m. on Jan. 22, 2020, at No. 15, Power Road in Abule Oki area of Iyana Ipaja, Lagos.

According to him, the convicts were members of an unlawful society, popularly called “Aiye”, and were arrested at a meeting of the unlawful society.

Besides, they were caught smoking Indian hemp while at the unlawful society meeting.

Oriabure said the offences contravened sections 411, 42 (a) and 166 (a) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015 (Revised). (NAN)
