Amawbia | Anambra State — The newly elected executives of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, paid a courtesy visit to the Wife of the Governor of Anambra State, Mrs. Nonye Soludo, at the Governor’s Lodge in Amawbia, signaling a renewed commitment to collaboration between the media and the state government.

During the meeting, Mrs. Soludo expressed gratitude for the “Most Supportive Governor’s Wife of the NUJ, 2024” award conferred on her, describing it as a motivation to deepen her engagement with media professionals. She urged the journalists to join the “Solution Team” and amplify the achievements of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration, which she said is “on a mission” to transform Anambra.

“As far as I am concerned, it is you guys that will spread the good works of the Solution government. Mr. Governor is not the usual politician that will blow his trumpets; he’s fully focused and got his eyes on the ball. The Governor is on a mission, and he always says every mission has a deadline! For him, it’s work! Work!! Work!!!” Mrs. Soludo stated.

Addressing the charged political climate ahead of the election year, she cautioned against opposition “lies and propaganda,” disclosing that even her children have faced derogatory remarks online. She emphasized the need for journalists to work closely with the government to access “genuine information” about its activities and achievements for accurate public dissemination.

Mrs. Soludo also assured support for journalists planning to tour projects executed by the Soludo administration, adding, “If God says my husband will rule Anambra for a second tenure, you will see a difference in the state. There will be Anambra before and after Soludo. By the special grace of God, Anambra will be where it is supposed to be.”

In his remarks, Dr. Emeka Odogwu, Chairman of the NUJ Anambra Council, acknowledged the union’s previously strained relationship with the government, vowing to forge stronger ties during their next three-year tenure. He described Mrs. Soludo as “our mother and the voice of the voiceless in the South East,” admitting, “We are in trouble and for that purpose, we decided to come and visit her.”

Dr. Odogwu revealed that approximately 400 active and 2,500 inactive journalists in the state have resolved to build a “good, working relationship” with the government. He praised Mrs. Soludo’s humility and her “Healthy Living” initiative, particularly the free distribution of nutritional pap to malnourished children and the promotion of backyard gardens.

The NUJ Chairman, a veteran journalist with over four decades in Anambra, further appealed for direct access to Governor Soludo to prevent “misguided reports.” He stressed, “Most times, we hear a lot of things, and if we are not well informed or educated about an issue, we may write misguided reports because we are reporting from one side. We are pleading for an interface with the Governor.”

Mrs. Soludo assured her support for the request, expressing optimism that the dialogue would strengthen media-government relations and ensure accurate reporting on the state’s development strides.

The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to transparency, collaboration, and the shared goal of positioning Anambra as a model state under the Soludo administration.
