Seven Policemen, Others Injured in Osun Chieftaincy Dispute

A chieftaincy dispute in Esa-Oke, Osun State, turned violent on Monday, leaving seven policemen and several residents injured after unidentified assailants opened fire. The attackers, dressed in black and traveling in a bus, reportedly ambushed police officers responding to a distress call. According to Osun police spokesperson Yemisi Opalola, the officers encountered a barricade and were fired upon while attempting to clear it. The crisis stems from the Osun State Government’s recent appointment of Prince Timileyin Oluyemi Ajayi as the Olojudo of Ido Ajegunle. Esa-Oke residents, who claim Ido Ajegunle is under the jurisdiction of the Owamiran of Esa-Oke, have protested the decision, arguing that Ajayi is from Ilesa. Tensions escalated after protests last Friday, culminating in Monday’s shooting, which left multiple people injured. Security agencies, including Amotekun and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, have since deployed personnel to the area.
