Saint Patrick’s College Awka has won the 2021 Rotary Annual Debate Competition in Awka

The competition which took place at Girls Secondary School Awka had four schools represented.

The atmosphere was in high spirit after Saint Patrick’s College Awka won the second round of the competition against St John of God Secondary School Awka.

The Rotary Annual Debate Competition had the students battle on different topics including, “Social media has done more good than harm and COVID-19 is a scam” having Girls Secondary School Awka as team proposition during the first round of the competition kicked out as Capital City Secondary School Awka was kicked at the second round of the competition.

As an international humanitarian service organization founded on friendship and service, the President Rotary Club of Awka District 9142, GRA branch Rotarian Somadina Okweluogu said that the competition is one of their annual events targeted at improving research and reading culture of teenagers.

On why the competition is necessary for secondary school students, the Anambra State Debate Coordinator who is also the Principal, Holy Cross Highschool Umuawulu, Mrs Amaka Anekwe, noted that such improves the students speaking ability and confidence and as well prepares them on how to make right research on diverse topic of interest.

Some of the students who took part in the competition, Achuorah Michael and Success Nnaemeka appreciated the club for organising the event as such gave them the opportunity to know more about debate.

The schools represented were Saint John of God Secondary School Awka, Girls Secondary School Awka, Capital City Secondary School Awka and Saint Patrick’s College Awka.

Achuorah Michael from Saint Patrick’s College Awka emerged the best speaker of the 2021 Rotary Annual Debate Competition.

Also the Language Desk Officer PRO Post Primary Schools Service Commission, Mrs Chukwujekwu Ngozi, lecturer Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Dr Emeka Odogwu and a one time Nigeria debate candidate to Singapore Mr Chiagozie Udorji were the judges present during the debate competition.

There were also presentation of certificates to participants and presentation of trophies to schools that took the first, second and third positions respectively.
