Radio Nigeria’s Golden Voice, Linda Menakaya is dead

Our dearly beloved and inimitable Aunty Linda Menakaya has gone home to her Maker. The unmistakable golden voice who ruled the radio airwaves in the 80’s and 90’s was reassigned to the heavenly choir early hours of Tuesday, June 9th 2020 at the age of 90.

A broadcaster par excellence, her iconic Radio Nigeria Enugu programme “Ozi Ekene” was an early Sunday morning delight and must listen.

The resonant voice had a velvety chuckle that both tickled and charmed the listener, attracting millions of ears from the coal city to Ebonyi, Anambra, Benue, Imo, Abia, Delta, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers States that Radio Nigeria Enugu short and medium wave services permeated.

The voice was not just the enigma, her choice of words were like apples of gold in silver setting.

The nuanced dialect made Igbo sound like cockney. Igbo language though was not her only language of broadcast.

She excelled in major Talk programmes produced in English where her mastery of Queen’s English and diction marked out her eloquence
