Polytechnic Lecturers to Begin Warning Strike on December 2nd – Kpanja
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has announced plans to commence a two-week warning strike on December 2nd, 2024. This decision was made during the Union’s National Executive Council meeting in Abuja on Thursday, where ASUP expressed frustration over the government’s failure to address several unresolved demands. ASUP President, Comrade Kpanja Shammah, revealed that the government had been uncooperative in meeting the Union’s eleven outstanding demands, some of which date back to previous administrations, particularly under former President Muhammadu Buhari. It is important to note that ASUP had previously issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Federal Government and relevant agencies, urging them to review and reverse decisions that contradict the provisions of the Polytechnics Act and other regulatory frameworks in the sector. The Union has also raised concerns about impunity and the disregard for key provisions of the Federal Polytechnics Act, state-level edicts, and other governing regulations. ASUP further accused the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) of overstepping its role by interfering with the responsibilities of the Academic Boards of Polytechnics, particularly in the admission process for Higher National Diploma students within Nigeria’s polytechnic system.
