Peter Obi Pleads For Release Of Abducted Schoolchildren, Cites Failures Of Governance

Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Mr. Peter Obi, has appealed to abductors holding schoolchildren captive to release them immediately, describing their condition as “a painful reminder of the depth of insecurity in our land.”
In a statement on Tuesday, Obi said he was shocked and heartbroken by images showing the children’s condition, particularly visible marks of abuse on their bodies.
“I am deeply shocked and heartbroken by the condition in which these abducted schoolchildren are, as seen from their flagellated bodies,” he said. “It is a painful reminder of the depth of insecurity in our land.”
The former Anambra governor linked the children’s suffering to poor governance and societal neglect, repeating his warning that today’s failures will be paid for by future generations.
“I have always said that the society we abuse today will take its revenge on our children tomorrow. When I first made that statement, some of these children were not even born,” Obi stated. “This is how the abuse of governance today produces devastating consequences long after the abusers are gone.”
He drew a parallel with Nigeria’s rising debt, arguing that decisions by current leaders leave lasting burdens for children yet unborn.
“It is the same with the loans our leaders take today. They will hurt our children in the future, as many will mature for repayment long after we are gone,” he said.
Speaking directly to the abductors, Obi appealed to their conscience and humanity.
“To those holding these children, I make a direct appeal to your conscience. Remember that these are innocent children — sons and daughters in whom parents have placed their hopes and future. In every one of them, you will find a reflection of your own child, your own family, your own humanity,” he said.
Obi stressed that no grievance can justify harming children.
“No grievance, no hardship, no justification can ever outweigh the sanctity of a child’s life and innocence. Whatever path led to this moment, there is still room for remorse, for humanity, and for a change of heart,” he pleaded.
He concluded: “I appeal to your sense of mercy: release these children immediately. Let them go. Return them safely to their families.”
The appeal comes amid growing concerns over insecurity and the continued abduction of students and vulnerable citizens across parts of the country.
