Pastoral Visit: Archbishop Okeke Urges Christians to Embody Humility, Charity…..Administered Sacrament Of Confirmation To 350 Candidates

The Archbishop of Onitsha and Metropolitan of Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province, Most Rev. Dr. Valerian Okeke, on August 31, charged Christians to hold fast to humility and charity, stressing that these virtues are essential for a meaningful life.
The Archbishop made this call during a pastoral visit to St. Benedict Parish in Fegge, Onitsha South Local Government Area, where he administered the sacrament of confirmation to no fewer than 350 candidates.
In his homily, Archbishop Okeke emphasized the importance of humility, citing the gospel reading from Luke 14:1, 7-14.
“When you invite guests for a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends, brothers or your kinsmen or rich neighbours because you would be repaid but when you invite the poor, maimed, blind and lame you would be blessed because they cannot repay you but would be repaid by the resurrection of the just.
“Whatever we have is a gift from God. God gives us freely both the air we breath and the rainfall which falls for both the righteous and the sinners.
“He reminds us the need to show appreciation and gratitude whenever we received from somebody. He condemned the attitude of giving to only those who have given you, explaining that such persons are in minus one of life existence.
“Don’t give charity in a way to cajole others or as an investment because you have not started, describing such person as a schemer, saying that God’s gift does not differentiate, charity must not have conditions.
The prelate urged Christians to emulate the life of St. Benedict, the patron saint of the parish, who was known for his holiness, charity, and vision, noting that St. Benedict’s legacy extends beyond his time, as his rules for communal living continue to guide monasteries worldwide.
Archbishop Okeke also stressed the need for selfless giving, warning against the attitude of giving only to those who can repay, emphasizing that true charity should be unconditional and without expectation of reward.
He cited the example of God’s gifts, which are freely given to both the righteous and sinners, and encouraged Christians to show appreciation and gratitude for the blessings they receive.
He also admonished the faithful to follow St. Benedict’s example, highlighting his role in establishing formal education in ancient times, noting that St. Benedict’s legacy serves as a reminder of the importance of humility, charity, and service to others
In the welcome address signed by the Parish Priest, Vice Chairman, Secretary Parish Council, Rev. Fr. Cosmas Muodum, Mr Okey Mobi and Helen Egbonu respectively appreciated His Grace for his support and assistance to the parish which they said is immeasurable.
“Your Grace, your episcopacy is very unprecedentedly significant. We commend your giant and enormous strides in our Archdiocese; in your holistic care of the flocks under your ministry, together with your deep concern for human capacity building and spiritual growth among others.
We would note that this is the first pastoral visit to St Benedict Parish after its declaration as a parish on August 1, 2010 by Arch Bishop Okeke during his pastoral visit to the church as an outstation.
