Nsukka LG completes 2nd market to decongest main market, begins allocation

Mr Cosmas Ugwueze, Chairman, Nsukka Local Government Area, Enugu State, says the new market on Aku Road will be officially inaugurated with electronics and phone dealers already directed to move in.

Ugwueze disclose this in Nsukka on Saturday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) while speaking on his one year in office.“Electronic and phone dealers in Nsukka main market (on Enugu Road) will be moved to the newly constructed Market on Aku Road Nsukka to decongest the main market,” he said.

It would be recalled that Ugwueze, who was the Vice-chairman of Nsukka LG was sworn-in as the chairman on June 29, 2020 by Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi due to the sudden demise of the chairman, Mr Patrick Omeje, on June 16, 2020.According to Ugwueze, selling of shop allocation forms for the new markey  has already started and as soon as it is completed the new market on Aku Road will be inaugurated.“

“The  construction of the market started in 2013, now it  has been completed.“Commercial buses and tricycles parks  around the main market will also be moved to the park in the new market to ensure free flow of vehicular traffic around  main market,” he said.

The chairman, on his administration’s focus for the past one year, said special attention was given to security, health and welfare of workers.He added that during the period Nsukka residents witnessed adequate security protection, which was made possible because of good collaborative efforts of the council with security agencies in the area.

“There is  reduction in number of crimes committed in the area as security agencies, the council  and neighborhood watch worked in synergy to ensure the LG was peaceful everyday,” he said.He also said that the health sector received serious attention as drugs and equipment were supplied to various health centres in the area.He recalled that when yellow fever outbreak occurred in Opi-Agu community last year, the council responded promptly and ensured that those affected were given adequate treatment.

“Because of that outbreak the council, through the help of Enugu State Government, rolled out yellow fever vaccine and ensured that all residents of Nsukka LG were vaccinated to avoid any other outbreak.“Currently our health workers are going into communities to give COVID-19 vaccines to residents who are interested,” he added.

Ugwueze, however, noted that since the COVID-19 pandemic lock-down which affected the country’s economy, the council was still able to pay regular monthly salary and allowances to its workers.He also noted that Nsukka had the highest number of primary school teachers among the LGs in the country and that his administration ensured that teachers received their salary at the end of the month.

“That is the reason all the workers are happy and nobody is complaining or protesting,” he said.The LG boss also commended Gov. Ugwuanyi for ensuring that Federal Government financial  allocations to local governments in Enugu State got to them.

“Not only that the governor does not tamper with LG allocation but he uses state fund to assist LGs when the need arises.“Enugu State is one of the most peaceful states in the federation because Ugwuanyi is honest, a peace loving leader as well as God-fearing,” he said.

The LG boss also commended residents of Nsukka LG for their support and encouragement in the past one year and urged them to keep it up.He, therefore, pledged to continue to serve with dedication and sincerity.(NAN)
