As the temperature in Nigeria soars to a scorching 41⁰C, tension mounts among the populace who find themselves grappling with the oppressive heatwave. Recent complaints from Nigerian citizens, exacerbated by the just-concluded African Cup of Nations finals on Sunday, February 11th, have brought attention to the harsh weather conditions plaguing the country.

Social media platforms have become platforms for venting frustrations, with notable personalities like Tunde Ednut, Iyabo Ojo, Toke Makinwa, and others chiming in on the unbearable weather. Memes and videos circulating on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook add a touch of humor to the otherwise grim situation.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) has issued warnings, urging citizens to brace themselves for more hot days and warm nights. The heatwaves, attributed to greenhouse gas emissions, necessitate proactive measures and climate-resilient practices to mitigate the impact.

Common health effects of heatwaves include dehydration, heat rash, and psychological stress. To combat these, individuals are advised to stay hydrated by drinking water regularly, avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages, limit protein intake to reduce metabolic heat, consume more fresh fruits and vegetables, and opt for cold baths whenever possible.

The sweltering heat has prompted Nigerians to humorously question, “Who forgot to close the gate of hell?” Despite the levity, the situation underscores the importance of prioritizing safety and well-being amidst challenging weather conditions. Let’s all stay safe and healthy during this period of extreme temperatures.
