On the 11th of February 2024, the residents of Ifite-Awka, in Awka South local government area of Anambra state, experienced a wave of devastation and sorrow as their hopes of the Super Eagles winning the African Cup of Nations were crushed by the Elephants of Côte d’Ivoire.

The atmosphere in Ifite-Awka was filled with anticipation and excitement as residents gathered in groups to watch the match, despite facing power failures. They cheered on the Super Eagles fervently, only to witness their dreams dashed as the team suffered a humiliating defeat to their rivals.

Expressions of disappointment flooded social media platforms as fans voiced their frustrations. Some attributed the loss to underperformance by the team, while others pointed fingers at specific players like Alex Iwobi and Ola Aina. Surprisingly, some even directed blame towards the current president of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

As the match concluded, the residents returned to their homes with heavy hearts, reminded of the moral lesson that one should not count their eggs before they hatch, and that it is not over until it is over.

The defeat served as a sobering reminder of the unpredictability of sports and the importance of resilience in the face of disappointment. As Ifite-Awka and the nation mourned the loss, they vowed to continue supporting the Super Eagles and to remain hopeful for future victories.
