NAEGE Pleads With Anambra Government To domesticate Developed Guidelines For Professional Practice
The Nigerian Association For Engineering Geology and the Environment, NAEGE, has pleaded with Anambra State Government to commence the process of domesticating the developed guidelines for the Professional practice of Engineering Geology/Geotechnics and Environmental Geology/Geotechnics through appropriate legislation, regulations and administrative policies.
The national President and Chairman of Council, NAEGE, Professor Salome Waziri, made the appeal when she led some members of the association on a courtesy call on Anambra State Commissioner for Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Professor Charles Ofoegbu, supported by his Information counterpart, Dr. Law Mefor, in his office at the Jerome Udoji state Secretariat Awka.
Professor Waziri opined that the guidelines were unanimously developed by Council of Nigerian Mining Engineers and Geoscientists, COMEG, in collaboration with the Nigerian Mining and Geoscience Society, NMGS, and NAEGE to among other things establish minimum standards for subsurface investigations and geotechnical practice before infrastructure development.
While assuring Anambra State of technical support, Stakeholders engagement, professional training, capacity building and advisory services to ensure successful implementation, Professor Waziri on behalf of NAEGE, congratulated their colleague, Professor Ofoegbu, on his well deserved appointment as the Commissioner for Petroleum and Mineral Resources, describing it as a square peg in a square hole.
Welcoming his guests, Commissioner Ofoegbu, who described NAEGE as a body that has produced many professionals for safe and sustainable construction, announced that one of the basic requirements for mining in Anambra State is the possession of Baseline Geological Studies as well as Environmental Impact Assessment, EIA.
While assuring them of undiluted collaboration, Professor Ofoegbu, reiterated state government’s resolve to prosecute and jail any engineering geologist that supervised a collapsed building.
Contributing, Dr. Mefor sought their collaboration towards ensuring that no professional should be allowed to practice without belonging to the profession’s professional body.
He attributed the monumental projects across the state to extreme prudential economic management by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, who according to him, has reformed governance to cut down cost through reversing capital expenditure and recurrent expenditure disparity, evidence in the current 2026 budget, which has 79% capital and 21% recurrent.
The visit climaxed with presentation of award and the developed guidelines to Commissioner Ofoegbu by NAEGE President, Professor Waziri.
