Man sets woman, three children ablaze in Lagos

The police in Lagos have arrested one Shola Adewunmi for igniting fire in the home of a woman he had disagreement with.

The incident occurred at the early hours of Wednesday at Powerline Road, beside Lawyer Raji Street.

Adewunmi,currently held at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department(SCIID) Panti, Yaba, was arrested by policemen attached to Alagbado Division after his phone gave him away.

It was gathered the suspect at the wee hours of Wednesday set fire in the shanty occupied by the woman, Iya Ayo and her three children- Ayo, Nifemi and Esther.

While Nifemi was said to have died as a result of the fire, it was gathered the woman and her two other children sustained severe burns.

Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal, who led reporters to the scene, described theincident as man’s inhumanity to man.

Edgal said the Divisional Police Officer, who responded to the fire incident, discovered a phone which was found to belong to Adewunmi when traced.

Edgal said:“This is the dwelling place for a woman and three of her children. They were sleeping and suddenly there was fire outbreak. They sustained very major degree burns and have been rushed to the hospital.

“Fortunately,the DPO and his team that came did a painstaking search and they were able to recover a phone, which was traced to belonging to one Shola Adewunmi who previously had serious altercation with the woman.

“Evidence we have so far is he purposely ignited the fire with the intent to burn the woman and her children alive.

 “He has been arrested and I have ordered that he be taking to the state CID for investigation.

“He will be properly investigated and his case file charged to court.

“I will direct DCP Panti to give you access to the suspect when we have completed investigation.”
