LCCI Urges Ongoing Stakeholder Engagement Over Telecom Tariff Hike

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has called for sustained dialogue among stakeholders in the telecommunications sector to ensure a balanced approach following the recent 50% tariff hike approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). LCCI Director-General, Dr. Chinyere Almona, highlighted the sector’s critical role in driving innovation, economic growth, and lifestyle enhancements but acknowledged the financial strain on operators due to rising energy costs, inflation, and currency depreciation. She noted that while the tariff increase might ease operators’ financial burdens, it could further strain consumers, particularly those in lower-income groups. Almona emphasized the need for improved service delivery, robust regulation, and strategic investments in digital infrastructure to drive Nigeria’s economic growth and digital transformation. Additionally, Almona urged the government to support the ICT sector with more funding, as it has shown resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic and remains a key contributor to economic recovery. She also advocated for minimizing human interference in regulatory processes and enhancing automation to boost efficiency. “Nigeria’s digital economy must be empowered to catalyze growth, drive innovation, and unlock new possibilities,” she concluded.
