The Kano State Attorney General, Haruna Dederi, has directed the withdrawal of all criminal charges against protesters involved in the #EndBadGovernance demonstrations. The announcement, made through the Director of Public Prosecution on January 27, 2025, followed a petition by Citizens’ Gavel, a civic-tech non-profit organization. The group had urged the Attorney General to exercise his constitutional powers under Section 211(1)(c) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to discontinue the case. The protesters, who joined nationwide demonstrations from August 1 to August 10, 2024, had faced charges including conspiracy to commit treason, unlawful assembly, and public disturbance. Rachael Adio, Communications Associate for Citizens’ Gavel, praised the decision as a significant victory for civil liberties in Nigeria, emphasizing that it reaffirms the right of Nigerians to peacefully voice their concerns. “This is a pivotal moment in the pursuit of justice,” Adio stated, commending the Attorney General for upholding the rule of law and ensuring citizens’ rights are respected. Citizens’ Gavel reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for justice and promoting accountability within the justice system.
