Lagos school wins BSN quiz for hearing impaired
Ipakodo Senior Grammar School, Ikorodu, Lagos State, has won the Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN) quiz competition for the hearing impaired.
Ipakodo Senior Grammar School came top out of the nine schools that participated in the competition.
Master Stephen Abiodun and Miss Abigail Adewale pulled 60 points to defeat their closest challenger, Hope Fountain Schools, Ijaye-Ojokoro, which pulled 48 points.
The third place position went to Federal Science and Tech College, Yaba, which pulled 47 points.
The first runner-up got cash gifts of N50,000 each, while the second and third runner ups got N30,000 and N20,000 each, respectively.
Earlier, Pastor Samuel Sanusi, the General Secretary, Chief Executive Officer, BSN, thanked the students for making out time to prepare for the competition.
Represented by Mrs Yemisi Oluwagbemi, Assistant General Secretary, Finance, Sanusi called on well meaning Nigerians and leaders of the Christian faith to contribute their quota in sponsoring the competition.
In another development, Sanusi commended the Federal Governments policy on mother tongue in schools, saying that it was a step in the right direction.
According to Sanusi, this policy, which is a step in the right direction, will help to preserve our languages and cultures, as the death of a language is the death of a culture.
He said that there were over 500 languages in Nigeria many of which had gone into extinction because they were not in use.
“We have been advocating for the use of our local languages both in the schools and at home.
“We are delighted the government has taken a position on this, making the mother tongue a compulsory medium of instruction for primary schools.
“As a people, we should be proud of our languages and cultures,” Sanusi said.
He said that the BSN had translated the Bible into many Nigerian languages to preserve the languages and cultures of the speakers of those languages.
He noted that the Bible could also serve as resource materials for instruction in those languages.
He added that so far, the society had translated the Bible into 27 Nigerian languages, while work is ongoing in 10 languages, including the Nigerian Sign Language.(NAN)
