The former rector, Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Dr. Izuchukwu Onu, has bagged the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) Friendship Award. The award which was the first in the history of the Polytechnic came after series of internal crisis between the union and the polytechnic management.

The Local Chapter Chairman of ASUP, Comrade Godson Okeoma, at the last Congress of his executive, said the award was well deserved, saying that it was unanimous decision of the entire executive.According to the ASUP chairman, “Dr. Onu is our own. The ASUP Award of Friendship on him is for being the friendliest chief executive of the polytechnic”.

He noted that within the short period Onu was on seat, he promoted the highest number of Chief Lecturers in the history of the institution adding that all issues of withheld promotion of members of the union has been released. He further stated that his members, who were promoted by previous administration without financial benefits have all received their payments under the leadership of the Acting Rector.

The ASUP boss maintained that the peaceful ambience being enjoyed between the polytechnic community and members of the governing council was because of the good leadership roles of the former Acting Rector. He disclosed that it was against the backdrop of his friendly dispositions to the welfare of the members of ASUP and for putting humanity as a priority that they were giving him the Most Friendly Rector Award.

Responding, the outgoing rector, who was represented by his Senior Special Assistant, Mr. Uche Chukwudire, regretted the unavoidable absence of his boss who he said greatly desired to receive the award himself but was constrained by the nature of his office.

He thanked members of the union for taking notice of his achievements, saying that the credit should go to God, who made it possible. He, therefore, maintained that he always value humanity adding that as long as he remains in the saddle of leadership in the polytechnic, he will always put the welfare of staff into consideration.

He regretted that the polytechnic was on the verge of collapse because of non reaccreditation of courses being run in the institution adding that out of about 62 courses offered in the polytechnic, the accreditation of 57 courses have expired.

He solicited the support of the members of ASUP to ensure that the courses regain accreditation by cooperating with the management of the polytechnic and by being diligent to their duties as lecturers.
