Foreign-based NGO Donates School Chairs To Eight Public Schools In Awka

Responding to Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s call for public partnership in education, the Awka Union Baltimore Washington, USA has donated school chairs worth millions of naira to eight public schools in Awka.

The gesture which aimed at improving quality teaching and learning for school children and also to contribute their quota in giving the children their best so as to attain a greater height in future.

It was gathered that the association has contributed to the growth and development of the community including building maternity ward and sinking bore hole at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku Awka and many more.

Receiving the chairs from the Union, the Executive Chairman, Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, ASUBEB, Dr Vera Nwadinobi said the union has heeded the call to help the government in education sector stating that the trend in education has gotten to the stage that all hands must be on deck so as to impact sound learning in the life of children more especially those in public schools.

The Executive Chairman, Dr Nwadinobi who spoke through ASUBEB Member Two, Dr Kay Chukwura noted that the present administration in the state has invested heavily in taking education to the greatest height as Governor Chukwuma Soludo gave free education to indigent school children in the public schools in the state and recruited five thousand teachers, noting that another phase of recruitment is ongoing, calling on other affluent citizens to join hands with the government to boost education in Anambra state.

The President of Awka Union Baltimore Washington USA, Chief Osita Okafor who disclosed that they have been on the mission for some years now, said they are nonprofit organization of men and women from Awka with the objective of helping the needy and poor in the society to give them a sense of belonging.

Chief Okafor noted that they will continue with the philanthropic gesture which they choose to do through raffle draw so as to know where and which village to intervene in improving the learning condition of teachers and pupils as according to him, seeing school children on the bare floor while learning is disheartening.

The Chairman, Umudioka Village Awka, Mr Christopher Uzor, extolled Ndi Awka Baltimore Washington USA, for remembering home and most importantly for investing in education and expressed satisfaction with the comportment of the pupils stating that it shows the teachers are doing great.

On her part, the Officer in charge, Awka South Local Government Area Education Authority, Mrs Florence Chinweze, commended the kindness, care and benevolence of Ndi Awka Baltimore and called on other clubs to emulate them.

The School Headmistress, Mrs Abigail Omenkwu also expressed gratitude to the union and outlined some other items needed in the school including nursery school chairs, band and other instructional materials.

Speaking onbehalf of the pupils, Miss Chisom Ifediora thanked the union for extending hands of love to them stating that they have provided a conducive atmosphere for them.
