Driver damages N26.7m G-Wagon

A 27-year-old bank driver, Nureni Olawale, was yesterday arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court for allegedly driving recklessly and damaging a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) worth N26.7 million.

He is standing trial on a five-count charge of reckless driving, causing bodily harm, unlawful damage and obstruction.

Prosecuting Inspector Mawari Solomon alleged that the defendant committed the offence on February 16 at 6:30am, on Bourdillon Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.

He said Olawale, while driving a Toyota Land Cruiser, with number plate  BDG 881 AC, drove recklessly and dangerously on the highway.

Solomon said Olawale drove in the direction prohibited by law and caused injury to Mr. Richard Alabi.

He said the defendant, while taking one way, damaged Alabi’s Mercedes Benz G-Wagon marked ARK 10 DC, worth N26.7 million.

The defendant pleaded not guilty.

His lawyer, Mr. U.N. Ezeokeke, urged the court to grant the defendant bail on liberal terms.

Magistrate A.A. Famobiwo granted the defendant N200, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

She said the sureties must be employed and show evidence of the performance of their civic responsibilities.

The case was adjourned till March 19.
