The threat from the President of the United States, Donald Trump seems to have awaken the sleeping political class in Nigeria. While I may not be in the school of thought of those who are pushing that there is a Christian genocide being committed in Nigeria, I also believe that there are certain powerful individuals within the country that are either backing the incessant terrorist attacks and killings of innocent citizens of Nigeria – both Christians and Moslem, the government of the day have not been doing enough to checkmate the activities of these terrorist attacks and supposed bandits that are having free day in the kidnapping and killings of innocent people.

I am forced to ask some salient questions to those who are against the threat from President Trump of US invasion of Nigeria aimed at stopping the killings of innocent Christians, and Nigerians from different religious divide. What are the concrete steps taken by the government to end the killings of Christians in North-Central and Nigeria at large? Why is the government negotiating with terrorists who have killed hundreds or thousands of innocent law-abiding citizens of Nigeria? Under which law is the government granting amnesty to terrorists while still holding on from releasing someone who is just a separatist agitator in their custody? How can the government justify the massive killings of Nigeria soldiers by some unruly terrorists through granting them pardon and integrating them into the country’s armed forces? How can the government do all these, yet surprised about President Donald Trump’s threat to invade Nigeria on account to protect Nigeria Christians from terrorist attacks and killings?

While I may not want any form of US military attack or invasion on Nigeria, as it will affect every one of us; I believe the government of Nigeria can do more by keeping its social contract with the people by protecting the lives and properties of her citizens which it has failed to do over the years. President Donald Trump may be overstepping his bound in his threat to attack a sovereign country, Nigeria, but the truth is that, if the government of the day have not failed the people, such threat wouldn’t be coming up in the first place, hence, those speaking for the government must as well be able to tell the government of the day that it has failed the citizens of Nigeria.

Going forward, some of those kicking against Donald Trump’s threat of invasion on Nigeria, such as Sheik Gumi, are known apologists of the bandits and terrorists operating in Northern Nigeria, hence whatever he says opposing Trump’s threat should not ordinarily been taken seriously, as I see him as a merchant of conflict. For people like Femi Fani-Kayode, who recently said Nigeria will fight back should US attempt invading Nigeria under any guise, has no military training or background, hence does not even understand what he is talking about. Such an element shouldn’t be taken seriously, as he is only seeking for cheap popularity, and possible government appointment through every means available to him.

Nigeria government beyond negotiating with President Trump for US support to end all forms of insurgency and banditry in Nigeria, should not listen to those who are either blindly supporting her just to gain some form of cheap popularity, or those who are known supporters of insurgency in the country. One thing has been established, insurgents and bandits are presently killing innocent Nigerians each passing day, and the effort being put forward by the government to protect the lives and properties of innocent Nigeria citizens has not been enough. The Nigeria government must go beyond fighting insurgency and banditry in the North, to arresting and prosecuting their sponsors. It should also end the tradition of incorporating insurgents to the country’s military establishment or granting them unworthy pardon, as such action dapples the morale of the country’s military men and women who risk their lives every day fighting against the same insurgent group.

I suggest that the Nigeria government should give the military both logistic support and political will to end insurgency and banditry in the country once and for all. I strongly believe that given the needed support, the Nigeria military has what it takes to end this anomaly called insurgency and banditry in the country. Those rascals should be dealt with ruthlessly without any form of mercy. I believe that is the only language and action that will put an end to insurgency and banditry in Nigeria; and the threat from Trump will be averted in the next few days.

Until then, there was indeed a country!
