The issue of citizens letting down their guard regarding COVID-19 infection prevention practices is of critical concern and a threat to the progress made so far in containing the infection. Here in Anambra State for instance, one can notice that most people no longer observe protective measures such as use of face mask and social/physical distancing.

As a Public Health Physician and an Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Specialist, I wish to use this forum to advocate for increased sensitization and mass mobilization for reestablishment of basic precautions such as practice of hand hygiene using water and soap or alcohol based hand rub (hand sanitizer), use of face mask and maintenance of physical distancing.

These measures have been shown by research to be effective in reducing transmission of the infection. In absence of these practices, we are running the risk of another spike in incidence of COVID-19. There is hence urgent need for public health actions to circumvent this risk.

The media as you would agree with me has a vital role to play in this regard. Also, public and social gatherings such schools, churches, mosques etc should be implored in sensitizing the public that COVID-19 is still very much with us and hence we shouldn’t relent in observing measures to remain safe.
