Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State

In the last one decade, Oko community was arguably the most serene host community of tertiary institutions in the country. Federal Polytechnic sits at the heart of Oko community in Orumba South Local Government of Anambra State. The polytechnic community shares border with Amaokpala,Ndiowu,Ekwukobia, and Nanka.

Okoh is the town of late former Vice president of Nigeria, Dr Alex Ekwueme his brother and king of the town Professor Laz Ekwueme, not forgetting Chidozie Nwankwo and C.N. Okoli and countless other Okoh sons and daughters doing fine in their calling.

In the last one decade or more, Oko was quiet like a mouse with little or no mischief. Students can go to anywhere in the community even in the midnight without any harassment or intimidation by any seen and unseen forces. I believe that the reasons for such serenity was because of “Ozoemezina” spirit of the critical stakeholders of the community. There was ABSOLUTE TRANQUILITY before now.

One may ask how chaos, anarchy, killings and cultists enveloped once safe haven? How the community housing our Alma mater suddenly became a theater of war, with blood stains? Who opened the doors of our citadel of learning community to those faceless, cruel, satanic, destructive blood thirsty monsters?

Apparently irked by the ceaseless killings in the community, an alumnus wrote on his Facebook timeline. The caption reads; “Professor Godwin Onu, please come and use your magic again” The disturbed fellow in the other way round, was calling for peace in the community as it was during Professor Godwin Onu’s 8 years reign as rector of the school.

The number of death cases associated with cult war in the last one year is pushing the polytechnic community to the edge of precipice. It’s alarming. For those who knows when Okoh was hot bed for cultism and other nefarious activities won’t wish the community returns to the days of environmental Sodom and Gomorah.

I enjoin the stakeholders of both the community and school to redesign their security architecture. The hydra headed responsible for such bloodshed should be tamed with every sense of seriousness. If this is done, peace will definitely return to the troubled polytechnic community. May we never know a better yesterday. Amen.
