The Mayor of Anaocha Local Government Area, Hon. Romanus Ibekwe, has called on churches, communities, and youth leaders to join the fight against indiscriminate waste dumping in Anambra State.
Ibekwe made the call on Saturday during the state’s 100 percent sanitation compliance exercise in Awka.
He said many people still do not take the environment seriously, and that the habit of blocking drainages and destroying government property with waste was creating serious problems for communities.
“All the mayors in Anambra State went out for environmental sanitation today and I have attended my own before coming here,” he said.
The Mayor noted that littering causes flooding, especially during the rainy season, and urged residents to make use of designated dump sites provided in each community.
“It is a very big disaster to our communities. I have advised my people to be making use of dump sites because we have them in each community where lorries will come and carry them,” he added.
Ibekwe stressed that government cannot do it alone and called for stronger partnership with churches, communities, traditional rulers, and youth groups to keep the environment clean.
“You can see that we have total shutdown today. That is to show you that government is taking it serious. In a few months’ time Anambra will be better,” he said.
