Alain Delon, the iconic French actor known for his roles in cinematic classics and a divisive public persona, has passed away at the age of 88, his children announced Sunday in a statement to AFP.

“Alain Fabien, Anouchka, Anthony, along with Loubo (his dog), are deeply saddened to announce the passing of their father. He passed away peacefully in his home in Douchy, surrounded by his three children and family,” the statement read. This comes after months of public disputes within the family concerning Delon’s declining health.

Delon, who starred in memorable films such as Purple Noon (1960) and Le Samurai (1967), died around 3:00 am (0100 GMT), according to his son Anthony. Although he had largely retreated from the screen since the 1990s, Delon remained in the public eye, especially in 2023, when his children filed a complaint against his live-in assistant, Hiromi Rollin, accusing her of harassment and threatening behavior.

The family’s internal conflicts had been widely publicized, especially following Delon’s stroke in 2019. Despite these challenges, the family has requested privacy during this time.

Before his stroke, Delon made a notable appearance at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2019, where he received an honorary Palme d’Or. “It’s a bit of a posthumous tribute, but from my lifetime,” he remarked while accepting the award.

In his later years, Delon lived in solitude at his home in a village in northeast France, where he expressed a wish to be buried near his beloved dogs. His former partner, Mireille Darc, had described him as living “in another world, in the past with people he very much loved.

“Though often labeled as both “inaccessible and so close” by peers like Brigitte Bardot, Delon was widely regarded as an instinctive genius. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he shunned technique in favor of raw charisma, earning praise for his roles as enigmatic, cool characters, particularly in Le Samurai, which influenced filmmakers like Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino.

However, Delon’s career was not without controversy. His support for far-right politician Jean-Marie Le Pen and comments about women and homosexuality sparked criticism. Though he denied accusations of domestic violence, he admitted to slapping women during disputes.

Despite the controversies and his complex personality, Alain Delon leaves behind a legacy of unforgettable performances and a profound impact on cinema. His opening line from Le Samurai perhaps best captures his enduring mystique: “There is no deeper solitude than that of the samurai, except that of a tiger in the jungle.”
