YSFON unveils U-20 football championship in Anambra
The Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON) has unveiled the Igwe Nnewi U-20 football championship in Anambra.
HRH, Igwe Kenneth Orizu, the traditional ruler of Nnewi, in whose honour the competition was organised, unveiled the cup in his palace, Otolo, Nnewi North Local Government Area.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the Igwe Nnewi U-20 Cup was organised by the Anambra Chapter of YSFON, in collaboration with the office of Pillar of Sports headed by Donatus Aguejidike.
Speaking at the event, Igwe Orizu thanked YSFON for their efforts at providing empowerment for youths through sports, and expressed delight that the competition was being held in his honour.
He endorsed and gave his royal blessings for a successful championship, while describing Aguejidike as a true son of the town.
In a short remark, Aguejidike said he was supporting the programme as a way of developing youths in his home state.
According to the Pillar of Sports, he brought the tournament home to show the world where he was from.
“I want to show the heritage of Nnewi to the world, so, I am proud that my King, Igwe Kenneth Orizu, who is one of the oldest traditional rulers in Nigeria, both in age and in the throne, has endorsed the U-20 YSFON Cup,” he said.
Akonam Obiefuna, chairman of YSFON in Anambra, said the 2022 edition of the competition would be a huge improvement on the previous ones, with the draws to be decided on Feb.26. (NAN)
