Youth, The Engine Room Of The Nation

International Youth Day was commemorated on August 12, 2021, to give rise to youth issues to the awareness of the international community and fulfil the potential of youth as partners in today’s global society. The Day offered a chance to rejoice and mainstream young people’s voices, actions and ambitions, as well as their important, universal and impartial engagement.

The Theme this year is: Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health with the aim of highlighting that the success of such a global effort will not be achieved without the meaningful participation of young people.

No doubt, there is need for inclusive support mechanisms that will ensure that youth continue to amplify efforts collectively and individually to restore the planet and protect life, while integrating biodiversity in the transformation of food systems.

With the world’s population expected to increase by 2 billion people in the next 30 years, it is recognized that simply producing a larger volume of healthier food more sustainably will ensure human and. planetary wellbeing. Other crucial challenges must also be addressed, such as poverty reduction; social inclusion; health care and climate change mitigation.

Youth are often the first to act in times of crisis, helping millions to survive, despite the risks. Their work upholds our common humanity.

Time has come for individual volunteers, communities and organizations to promote their contributions to development at the local, national and international levels. It is also time for people and volunteer-involving organizations to work with government agencies, non-profit institutions, community groups, academia and the private sector.

Youths around the world should equally answer calls in times of crisis, helping to save lives today and supporting those who want to continue living their lives with dignity tomorrow. Youth, as agent of change, highlight the contribution of voluntary engagement of people from the grassroots in decision-making processes, ultimately creating spaces for participation that lead to stronger governance, social cohesion, peace and sustainable development.

The goal of the event was to pay special tribute to the contributions of youth volunteers to global peace and sustainable human development, highlighting that young people act as agents of change in their communities.

International Youth Day focused on the difficulties that some young people are experiencing throughout the world. Half the children between the ages of six and 13 lack basic reading and math skills. Childhood poverty is also still a prevalent problem globally.

Our young and carefree days do not last forever. Unfortunately, many youngsters around the world face difficulties and have limited access to essential resources that can pave the way for a better future.

It is a thing of joy therefore that the United Nations General Assembly endorsed the Declaration on the Promotion among Youth of the Ideals of Peace, Mutual Respect and Understanding between Peoples. They began devoting time and resources to empower the youth by recognizing up-and-coming leaders and offering them resources to meet the needs of the world. Mobilize the youth in politics, and manage resources to address global problems.
