“WOMEN SUPPORT YOURSELVES” – ANAMBRA NUJ CHAIRMAN, ODOGWU

The chairman of the Nigerian Union Of Journalists, NUJ, Anambra State Council, Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, PhD has admonished women to support each other to excel better.

Comrade Odogwu stated this at the one _ day – training workshop on eliminating gender based violence held at Godwin
Ezeemo international press centre, Awka on 25th Nov, 2022.

The seminar had so many dignitaries in attendance including Prof Ogugua Ikpeze represented by Dr Helen Obi of faculty of law Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka who spoke on protecting women’s rights :VAAP enforcement and Mrs Nancy Ekong Ndidiamaka ,Area Manager,ITF Awka as well as former
Commissioner for Information and Culture, Dr Tony Onyima. Pharm Victor Okeke, the President General of Enugu Agidi Brotherhood Association was the chairman of the occasion, and so many others.

The event was truly an eye opener as the speakers dealt extensively on the role of media in eliminating gender based violence. The Chairman of the Union in his opening remarks had advised women to support each other .He opined that women should use their population factor to change the narratives no matter the situation for a better society. He went on to say that women are the architect of their problems,he cited the case of widowhood practices as one example because it is carried out by women against their fellow women.

One of the guest speakers who was former Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr Tony Onyima spoke on eradicating harmful practices against women and girls; the role of Journalists.

He explored more on the roles of media. He made mention of reporting realism and not sensationalism, the right choice of words in reporting gender-based news and some other points. He also urged every Journalist to read a book titled ” 10 days in a madhouse” which he opined would help Journalists in reporting news.

In her closing remarks, the Chairperson workshop organizing committee/Chairman of International Training Committee of the NUJ, Comrade Uche Kalu commmeded the pivotal roles of Prof Chinyere Stella Okunna, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Paul’s University Awka doe her support and solidarity even as she gave God all the glory for making the event a huge success.
