Wisdom Science/Mathematics Academy, Nise Hosts Colourful Inter-House Sports Competition

It was a remarkable and exciting moment at the field of Central School, Nise, in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, on April 1, 2026, as the management and students of Wisdom Science/Mathematics Academy, Nise, held their biennial inter-house sports competition.

The event attracted a large turnout of guests from within and outside Nise, including parents, pupils, students from neighbouring schools, academicians, clergy, and well-wishers. Among the dignitaries present were Barr. Tony Nwabuona (Ozo Nzezuo), Patron of Yellow House; Mr. Ejiofor Wilfred Ekpe (Atumaka); Engr. Arinze Eche, Patron of Red House; Mr. Nche Anunobi, PTF Chairman; Mrs. Edith Amaechina, Matron of Green House; Mr. Amos and Dr. Nkolika Ejesi, Parents of the Day.

Also in attendance were Guests of Honour including Rev. Canon Royce Umezulora, Rev. Arinze Nnakwue, Rev. Obinna Okafor, and Rev. Christian Ibekwe, while Special Guests of Honour included Ven. Silas Ike, Ven. D.C. Ezeobi, and Ven. C.N. Okafor, among others.

The event featured a colourful match past, various sporting activities, technical skill demonstrations, and handcraft displays by students from both the host and invited schools. Pupils of the academy were elegantly dressed in their respective house colours—White, Red, Yellow, and Green—signifying their team affiliations.

The programme commenced with an opening prayer led by the school proprietor, Rev’d Canon Basil Orji, followed by the traditional breaking of kolanut by a parent and indigene of Nise. This was followed by the ceremonial relay of the inter-house sports torch, passed from the PTF Chairman, Mr. Nche Anunobi (represented by a teacher), to the Proprietress and Manager, Nneora Mary Basil; then to the Proprietor, Rev’d Canon Basil Orji; the Head Teacher, Mrs. Joy Nwankwo; the Games Mistress, Mrs. Comfort Efiong; and finally to a pupil.

Delivering the Chairman’s address on behalf of the Chairman of the occasion, Mr. Ejiofor Wilfred Ekpe (Atumaka), the school proprietor, Rev’d Canon Basil Orji, emphasized the importance of time management in both academic and sporting activities. Using the 100-metre race as an illustration, he highlighted the need for speed and precision.
He noted that all activities in the school are rooted in the application of mathematics, stressing the link between academics and sports.
“In academics, you must think fast. Even during mathematics quizzes, time is a key factor. When a question is asked and not answered within the allotted time, the opportunity is lost. This shows that sports and academics are interconnected. We are committed to developing our students both physically and intellectually,” he said.
At the end of the match past, Yellow House came fourth with 65 points, Red House placed third with 68 points, Green House came second with 72 points, while White House emerged overall winner with 74 points.
In the teachers’ category, the Proprietress and Manager, Nneora Mary Basil, secured first position, followed by Mrs. Chika Okeke in second place, while Mrs. Rachael Onisake came third.

Several individual and group sporting events were keenly contested. In the sack race, Obuka Chinonso of Yellow House emerged first and was awarded a gold medal by the school proprietor. Ndubuisi Wisdom, also of Yellow House, took second position and received a silver medal, while Ezeobi Paschal secured third place with a bronze medal.
In the boys’ 100-metre race, Achuke Adebi of Yellow House finished first, Okoye Chinedu of White House came second, while Jasper of Red House placed third.
In the girls’ long jump event, Okoye Chikamso of White House emerged first, followed by Osinachi of Green House in second position, while Ejiofor Afoma of Red House came third.
Other events also featured outstanding performances, with winners receiving medals based on their positions, while trophies were presented to the best-performing houses. The atmosphere was filled with excitement and jubilation among students, teachers, and parents.
In his closing remarks, the school proprietor, Rev’d Canon Basil Orji, congratulated the winners and encouraged those who did not emerge victorious to see the competition as a motivation to improve. He stressed that the inter-house sports competition is not only for entertainment but also aimed at instilling sportsmanship, resilience, and teamwork in the students.
He further emphasized that striving for success is part of life’s journey and that teamwork remains a vital pathway to achievement. He thanked God for the success of the event and expressed hope for an even better outing in the future.
