We Have Recorded 717 Rape Cases In 5 Months In Nigeria- IGP

The Inspector – General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu has announced that seven hundred and seventeen rape cases were recorded within five months in 2020.

Speaking with Newsmen after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed and the minister of Women Affairs Pauline Tallen, at the presidential villa, IGP Adamu said seven hundred and ninety-nine suspects have been arrested so far.

The IGP said while six hundred and thirty-one cases have been taken to court, fifty-two are under investigation and will soon be concluded.

He said the police and other security agencies as well as other non-governmental organizations have been collaborating to seeing that these cases of rape and gender-based violence are dealt with.

While describing rape as a wicked offence, Adamu asked the citizens to report any crime related to gender-based violence.

Over the past weeks, the issue of rape has become a focal point of discussion in Nigeria, with calls for stricter sanctions against perpetrators.
