Water Bill: Commotion Senators Threaten To Kill Controversial Legislation.

Although the said bill has passed its first reading at the floor of the House of Representatives, top senators have assured fellow citizens that they will do their utmost to reject the bill when it is brought before them by Tuesday, September 15, The Nation reports.

Some top members of the National Assembly have given their voices against the controversial water bill that has sparked reactions and tension among Nigerians.

One of the federal lawmakers who condemned the proposed legislation is the Senate’s minority leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe.

speaking to journalists in Abuja recently, Abaribe noted that he and his colleagues will make sure the bill does not see the light of day.

He said: “We have not seen it in the Senate. When it comes, we will reject as before.”

Another prominent senator, Biodun Olujimi, said that she and other lawmakers in the red chamber will stand on behalf of Nigerians against any bill that will threaten the nation’s peace.

Ortom in a statement on Saturday, August 29, through his spokesperson, Terver Akase claimed the provisions of the bill granted herdsmen unhindered access to river basins, adjacent marine and coastal environments across the country.

The governor called on the Senate and House of Representatives to reject the bill in the interest of the country.

Soyinka warned that if the bill is passed into law, it would hand the Nigerian president “absolute control over the nation’s entire water resources, both over and underground.
