By OGEMDI OZOEMENAM, Awka
The Congress of University Academics (CONUA), Nnamdi Azikiwe University Chapter has pledged its commitment to a better welfare of its members.
Coordinator of UNIZIK Chapter of the union, Professor Chigozie Damian Ezeonyejiaku, who stated this to newsmen in Awka, said the recent emergence of CONUA in UNIZIK is to provide a platform for academics in Nigerian public universities to thrive.
He noted that its goal is to achieve a stable academic environment and intellectual freedom while placing strong premium on the welfare and concerns of the members.
According to him, “The union fully commenced operations in UNIZIK on the 12th of March 2025, and I was fortunate to emerge as the pioneer coordinator. As you all know, CONUA, just like other sister unions in the university, is registered by the Federal Government to provide a platform for academics in Nigerian universities.
The union prioritises welfare of academics, stable academic environment and intellectual freedom”, he added.

The Coordinator further called on the Federal Government to reverse the current brain-drain in the university system and prioritise funding of education for the future of the country.
Prof Is Ezeonyejiaku also encouraged intending members to become part of CONUA and to seize the numerous opportunities presented by the union to not only improve themselves, but also to advocate and advance university education in Nigeria.
“Together, the academic community can be strengthened for optimal performance of every stakeholder in the sector”, Prof. Ezeonyejiaku had concluded.
